Prevents accidental aspiration

Aspir-Guard prevents fluids and dental debris from being accidentally aspirated during a routine dental procedure.

Numerous publications and textbooks state that the standard of care requires the use of a material to block the oropharynx from accidental aspiration of fluids that accumulate during every dental procedure.

Aspir-Guard is a dehydrated PVA donut-shaped guard that when rehydrated, has a soft gentle sponge-like feel. The rehydrated Aspir-Guard is placed over the distal end of the ET tube prior to intubation. The attached strings are used to fasten the Aspir-Guard to the anaesthetic tie used to secure the ET tube to the patient.

After the patient is intubated, the Aspir-Guard is moved into place to block the oropharynx from fluid aspiration. Once the procedure is finished, the Aspir-Guard is gently removed together with the ET tube.

While the guard is designed to be too large to easily pass down the throat, it's important to rule out any potential complications from aspiration or ingestion. 

Swallowing an Aspir-Guard is a potentially serious situation that requires prompt medical evaluation and intervention.

  • Aspiration Risk: While the Aspir-Guard is soft and spongy, there's still a risk it could be inhaled into the lungs, causing breathing difficulties or lung damage.
  • Ingestion Risk: If swallowed, it could lodge in the digestive tract, potentially causing blockages or other issues.
  • Potential for complications: Depending on the size and shape of the piece, and the individual's anatomy, it could cause discomfort, pain, or other complications.
  • Don't induce vomiting:
    • Do not attempt to make the patient vomit, as this could cause further complications.
