Attach the VETGuardian PLUS monitor to a kennel or IV pole within five feet (about 1.5 m) of the patient, angled roughly 45° towards the head and chest. Enter the patient's manual temperature to calibrate the device, then press start.

VETGuardian PLUS reads vital signs at a distance, so a few minutes of correct setup makes a significant difference to accuracy. These five steps take under a minute and are worth building into your kennel routine.
This is the single most important step. The device uses your manual temperature reading to calibrate itself onto the patient and filter out everything else in the kennel. Entering vitals after a session has already begun means the device has not been calibrated for that patient.
Switch the live feed to Thermal. A standard video view can look perfect while the thermal view shows reflections from kennel bars, radiators or other warm surfaces. If anything is competing with your patient as a heat source, adjust the position until the patient is clearly the strongest target.
Position the monitor within five feet (about 1.5 m) of the patient, angled roughly 45 degrees towards the head and chest. Mounting too high increases reflection from kennel bars and gives the device competing areas of interest to lock onto.
Pulse and respiration are detected from chest wall movement, so a lateral position gives the clearest signal. Keep the face in view at the start of the session for the temperature reading, then align the aim box on the monitor over the chest, or chest and head.
If you or a colleague need to reach into the kennel, or another animal crosses the field of view, select Pause on the monitor or in your browser, then Resume once clear. Re-entering the manual temperature after resuming will re-calibrate the device for the most accurate readings.

The VETGuardian PLUS system is based on patented Continuous Waveform (CW) Doppler RADAR technology from the University of Florida. The radio wave can bounce back from chest wall movements to detect breathing and penetrate soft tissue to detect pulsating heart rate.
Although the VETGuardian PLUS system was specially designed for dogs and cats, it works on most land animals. We have conducted research with 20+ species, including snow leopards, lizards, Komodo dragons, and giant tortoises. Veterinarians can customize alarm thresholds by species and breed.
You can run VETGuardian PLUS monitors without Wi-Fi, but certain features, like Alexa integration and remote surveillance, do require it.
The VETGuardian PLUS monitor should be within 4-5 feet of the patient; however, the signal strength feature is the best method to track the quality of vital signs readings. Like a cell phone, high signal strength suggests high accuracy, and low signal strength suggests low accuracy.
VETGuardian PLUS monitors are intended for stationary subjects but can accommodate some motion in a cage while also tracking vital signs.
Yes. The VETGuardian PLUS system data will be stored on the cloud compliant to all standard cloud security protocols.

Yes. Always take a manual temperature and enter it into the system before starting the session. This calibrates the device onto your patient and helps it filter out other heat sources in the kennel environment. It only takes a few seconds and it makes a substantial difference to the accuracy of all subsequent readings.
The most common factors are a device mounted too high or at the wrong angle, a session started before the manual temperature was entered, reflective or warm surfaces competing with the patient in the thermal view, and people or other animals entering the field of view mid-session. Checking the thermal view before you start will show you immediately whether anything is competing with your patient.
Select Pause on the monitor or in the Cloud App first, carry out what you need to, then select Resume. Anything entering the field of view between the monitor and the patient can affect the signal and the device's calibration. Re-entering the manual temperature after resuming is good practice.
